Exploring Endings

Death Doula Services

Founded by End of Life Doulas, Fin provides a friendly space to explore death, dying, and grief, offering practical tools and guidance on how to approach these subjects and document end-of-life plans. We offer bespoke training, workshops, and support groups to care providers. Through our work, we see how supporting people to explore their own relationship with and attitudes towards death and dying can have profound benefits for themselves, their colleagues, and those they care for personally or professionally.

What is an end of life doula?

Also known as a death doula, an end of life doula is a companion who supports a person and those important to them through the dying process, much like a birth doula does with the birthing process. It is often a community-based role, aiming to help people cope with death by recognising it as a natural and important part of life. The role can range from offering practical, to emotional and spiritual support depending on the needs of the individual.

Fin's vision is to modernise and refresh how we approach death, dying, and end-of-life planning. Although the recent global pandemic has brought death to the forefront of our minds, modern society remains increasingly distanced from these subjects. Our goal is to normalise conversations about death and make end-of-life planning a routine part of life, enhancing our lives by embracing the finite nature of existence. This is where our name 'fin' comes from.

Exploring this topic and having your wishes documented can significantly impact your end-of-life experience. We encourage everyone, regardless of age, to put these plans in place, as none of us know when they will be needed. By doing this work, we hope to foster better connections with ourselves, those around us, and the wider community. Awareness of our mortality can bring gifts such as greater presence, improved decision-making, and clarity, enabling us to live more fully and open-heartedly.

As part of our mission, Fin offers Death, Dying, and Bereavement training to care providers. This training aligns with the latest CQC regulations and the new quality statement 'Planning for the Future,' which outlines how care providers must meet 'we statements' regarding end-of-life care, including:

Supporting people to plan for important life changes, so they can make informed decisions about their future, including at the end of their life.

  • This quality statement requires care staff to:

  • Support people to engage in advance planning while they have the capacity to do so.

  • Identify when a person they are supporting is approaching the end of their life.

  • Understand and be able to discuss and communicate decisions around withdrawing treatment.

  • Collaborate with individuals who wish to receive fewer care interventions at the end of life.

  • Assist individuals in expressing their wishes regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Through our bespoke training, workshops, and support groups, we help care providers explore their relationship with death and dying. By providing practical tools and guidance, we enable staff to navigate these critical conversations and document end-of-life plans effectively. This approach not only ensures the best care for those they support but also promotes staff self-care and improves retention by supporting a healthier and more supportive work environment.
